Another Fire in a Scottish Stately Home

Another Fire in a Scottish Stately Home. Luckily, this time, there was not too much damage. The Fire started in a freezer in the basement. This highlights the importance of having regular Portable Appliance Testing carried out.

Stately Homes are at particular risk because of the inherant risks associated with them. It is imperative that a suitable and sufficient Fire Risk Assessment be carried out.

Scottish Government Fire Safety Guidance

Hello all,

I have posted a link from The Scottish Government website www.infoscotland/firelaw.com

which may stimulate debate.

There is a large Q&A session which relates to many aspects of The Fire (Scotland) Act 2005: part 3 and The Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006. This is taken from one of those questions: "Do I have to pay a Fire Safety specialist to carry out a Fire Risk Assessment?"

Read the answer here.

The last paragraph in this article states:

"In addition many people (such as employers) should already be familiar with the concept of risk assessment as a result of compliance with previous fire safety legislation. The new legislation is similar in principle to previous legislation but extends beyond workplaces to a wider range of premises. "

This no doubt relates to The Fire Precautions Workplace Regulations 1997 and The Management of H & S Regulations.

I can assure you that in my experience and the experience of others this is not the case. Over 70% of Small to Medium Enterprises have never carried out a Fire Risk Assessment under this legislation.
